The site of The Bristol Bol has an ancient history of beauty and leisure that dates back to early antiquity, with evidence that its lush stately park housed a Roman “villa antica” - a luxurious estate that served as a leisure retreat for the Roman elite, characterized by extensive, landscaped grounds and opulent decoration
19th century vision
In the 19th century the site saw the construction of a magnificent Venetian baroque palace for the influential Martinis-Marchi family, inaugurated in 1868. Originating from Bol, the legacy of this family is deeply woven into the historical and cultural fabric of central Dalmatia. As Venetian nobility, Martinis-Marchi luminaries shaped local life in the region from the early 16th to the end of the 19th century, through enlightened patronage, civic influence, and exquisite architecture
Royal accolade
In April 1875, during his tour through Dalmatia, Emperor Franz Joseph I dined at the Martinis-Marchi palace, and greatly admired the beauty of its sprawling, classically landscaped gardens. He even admitted the park was more beautiful than his own, in Schönbrunn. In his diary from the trip he remarked on the warm and spectacular welcome he received in Bol, also praising Bol wine as being the best in Dalmatia. Stairs from the riva to the place entrance were created especially for his arrival, and are still today known as “krojeve skaline”
20th century vigor
After World War II, the palace was replaced with a typical Yugoslav worker resort, for employees of the Yugoslav railways. As a state-subsidized holiday retreat, it brought together working class families from the entire country, allowing them to enjoy all the benefits of a tranquil seaside vacation, fostering a sense of community, summer idyll and well-deserved leisure
21st century evolution
In the late 1990s the resort transitioned into Hotel Park, named after its celebrated gardens. As a familiar landmark in the heart of Bol, it continued to embody the island’s tradition of warm, unpretentious hospitality and a relaxed Mediterranean way of life
